sameview monthly - Jan 2019

Hi,

We hope that you're having a great summer and start to 2019. There are so many initiatives planned to progress sameview this year and we can't wait to share them all with you.

One of our aims this year is to improve the connection of our community of families together. This is something many of you have asked for, a way to speak to others walking a similar path so we can support each other.

With that in mind we are on the lookout for families who would like to participate in a trial program, where we'll be supporting each other to improve the coordination and management of our care and support (details to register your interest below).

Lastly if you are a new family or provider  that joined us during the new year - welcome! The start of the year has been a great opportunity for families and providers to take control of their care coordination and work effectively to achieve their goals in 2019.

Danny

Examples of what we are working on includes:
  • Annual review reporting
  • outcomes reporting
  • standardised on-boarding for providers,
  • and more!
If you are a provider and want us to help you improve your workflow, or you want to be involved, please let us know.

Upcoming peer programs for care coordination - for families and providers

As mentioned above, we are planning on launching separate programs for families, and providers to work in a peer-supported way through issues related to disability care coordination. For the provider program, the content will focus on the business issues faced by clinicians in their aim to provide coordinated care.

If you are interested in participating in this program, please click below to register your interest so we can save you a spot.

Founder update

For our family school breaks are such a great opportunity to achieve some great therapy gains but against a heavy therapy load, we are also balancing social family, and sporting activities. Also important is making sure we aren't dragging the siblings to too many appointments, and just having time for relaxation.

We've done a bit of therapy over the holidays but I think the social and sporting has outweighed clinic work. We've also been working hard with our providers on home modifications through our NDIS plan. This will include a more accessible bathroom and also ramps into the house. These modifications could not come soon enough as manual handling is becoming more of an issue as time passes.

We had one little scare last week, that resulted in a day in emergency at Sydney Children's. For Monty we re always worried about the possibility of a shunt failure if certain signs are present. Fortunately it was just a regular virus, and after the standard round of tests we were cleared to go home.

In terms of work, to keep sameview's progress on track we've been experimenting with a closer work location to home and working through the evening after Jess comes home from work. This has worked pretty well and one of the moments I enjoyed most was a late evening chat to a family about their needs and feedback on our platform. I am looking forward to more regular sleep and work patterns though.

Wishing all of our families the best for their return to school next week. Looking forward to speaking to you soon.

Cheers,
Danny

Here Is What Our Families Have Been Striving Towards This Year...

*|MC:SUBJECT|*

sameview monthly - December

Hi,

Thank you for joining us on our journey this year. I'm sure that you would have worked hard towards your goals this year and we hope that 2018 has been a successful year of making great strides towards achieving them.

When it comes to goals, hopes, or dreams, sameview families are marching each day, step by step towards achieving what is most important to their family and loved one. Sometimes we go back a couple of steps, or maybe even a lot, but by looking back at how far we've come, and having a supportive team, we can rebuild our motivation and continue to aim high.

I'd like to share with you just how diverse and important the goals of sameview families are via our card below. I'd like you to also know that your support isn't just for sameview, it is for these families, and their individual missions.

I look forward to continuing this amazing ride with you in 2019, in the meantime I wish you and your families a happy, peaceful, and safe holiday season.

Danny

ARATA Conference 2018

This month we had the privilege of presenting at the Australian Rehabilitation & Assistive Technology Association (ARATA) annual Assistive Technology conference.

It was such a great opportunity to share sameview while learning about the complex but innovative world of AT products. The highlight for me was finally meeting the incredible Christopher Hills and his equally awesome dad Garry in person. Christopher shows you just how much is possible through AT and in particular switch control, while his dad is an amazing model for other parents of children with disabilities. Check out Chris' work on youtube here.

Melbourne Disability Institute

We also spent time this month at a workshop at the Melbourne Disability Institute. It was great to be able to meet and work with their staff after attending their launch earlier this year. The vision of the Melbourne Disability Institute (MDI) is to transform the social and economic health and wellbeing of people with disabilities through high-quality research, teaching and training, and knowledge translation.

One thing I recommend checking out is their podcast recorded from a recent round table discussion on improving the health and lives of Australians with intellectual disabilities.

Founder update

We've coming towards the end of a very big year for sameview, but a much bigger one for our family and Monty. Our dreams of him starting school with his brother and sister in a supportive and inclusive environment has been something we've been working towards for years. I'm so happy to share that the year has been a success, with Monty loving a school and community that he is a part of as much as anyone else. If you'll indulge me here are some highlights for us from the year:
  • Started kindy in a mainstream public school, with his brother and sister.
  • Learnt to read. Monty loves chapter books and has never missed a night of reading before bed.
  • Writing, Monty uses his ipad to write, and loves to write weekly journals, and letters to his friends.
  • Sport. This year we've been playing soccer, tennis, and athletics.
  • Independence and being a part of the community. Monty doesn't miss an opportunity to learn how to do something himself, or to help others. You'll see him cleaning up after a school event, or helping out at a working bee.
  • At the end of 2018, Monty is confident with school, friends, and has become a part of the local community,
Closing back to goals and children, it's amazing how quickly things can change and require you to adapt. Over the last few weeks the theme in our house has been all about independence, and learning how to do - everything. We've learnt how to run the washing machine, the dishwasher, fold the washing, make our bed, and more.

As parents we have to match that enthusiasm and push Monty's goals as much as we can. All of this is with an eye on the future, and what kind of life he will live as an adult.

I wish you a wonderful summer and holiday season. We'll be right here over this period working on the sameview platform and supporting our community. Looking forward to seeing you in 2019.

Cheers,
Danny

sameview monthly - November

Hi there, Sameview is starting to feel like it's coming together...

Now that our core platform is live and we have families and providers using it, my focus is now on making sure that what we've created delivers a positive impact for those that use it. The last few months have marked a big change in the evolution of our social enterprise, from the idea that Jess and I came up with one evening, to the years of refining and understanding the problem, to prototypes and trials, and now having something in people's hands.

Proving that we are making an impact on the issue of care coordination will always be our primary objective, and now we have started work on making the entire family and provider experience journey better.

Our vision is that sameview will empower families to:
1: Have the confidence to set ambitious goals,
2: Find and assemble the best people to help,
3: Have these people work in effective and collaborative teams,
4: Receive more effective care, and with less stress and workload.

Platform update

As always we love your comments an suggestions so please keep these coming. This month our platform has been enhanced to include:
  • Ability to change team member permission levels easily.
  • Improved customisation of your about page, you can now change the order of content to suit.
  • Better in-app support and guides are now live too.
What we're working on now:
  • Exciting reporting capabilities (no these words can go together) - to help with annual reviews, progress reports...
  • Improved on-boarding of new team members - to make the process of getting new people into your team as smooth and effortless as possible, imagine not having to tell the same story again and again...
  • Better live interactions with you - to make using our platform even more easy and natural.

National Carers Week 2018

During carers week, we released videos each day on how sameview has been built to assist carers and their families. We've had a great response to these videos and if you want to check them out yourself you'll find them here:
Day 1: Sharing important information.
Day 2: Connecting your team together.
Day 3: Meaningful goals and steps.
Day 4: Sharing experiences and progress in an engaging and rewarding way.
Day 5: Looking back and reviewing progress.
Day 6: Helping providers to deliver coordinated care
Day 7: Families and providers that can benefit from sameview.

Kinderling and Beam Australia feature

One common issue all carers face is the struggle to find and maintain flexible employment. We spoke to the amazing people at Beam Australia who are experts in finding flexible and quality roles for parents so they can continue to build great and rewarding careers without having to sacrifice care and family. You can check out our interview with Beam (featured on Kinderling) here.

Podcast interview - Private Practice Made Perfect

Cathy Love has been an amazing supporter of ours since the very beginning. In addition to coaching allied health business owners  to run successful and happy businesses, she also guides families in how to manage their care. We were interviewed by Cathy for the second time for her great podcast. You can listen to it too here.

Founder update

Celebrating Carer's week was a great experience and opportunity to talk more broadly about carer life with our community. Every conservation with a member of our community is another great learning experience for us, and it is this collection of knowledge and experience that sameview's design is informed by.

At home we've had a great month as a family and during the recent school holidays we made the decision to minimise the number of appointments and activities to concentrate on relaxed quality family time. School holidays are always an opportunity to push for big gains through intensive therapy blocks, but with the workload isn't just on Monty as it means logistically we are limited to what Hayley and Theodore get to do a well.

With Monty's therapy we're feeling the pressure of getting everything we have highlighted in our NDIS plan done, particularly when it comes to home modifications and equipment. One thing we're learnt over the years is that while clinicians may have similar job titles, what they can actually deliver depends so much on their expertise and area of specialisation. This makes the process of finding the right help and assembling a great team a sometimes time consuming and expensive process. Trial and error isn't really something I want to use our NDIS plan for, I want our investments in cost, time, and effort to be effective.

Coming up I'll be presenting at the Australian Assistive Technology Conference in Melbourne mid-Nov. I'm also excited about letting you in on what some of the new and exciting things we're working on but I'll wait till I have a bit more to show you next month. Until then I hope you are well and thank you for your ongoing support.

Cheers,
Danny
Ok so no therapy over the holidays but that doesn't mean you can avoid a trip to the dentist.

sameview monthly - October

*|MC:SUBJECT|*

sameview monthly - October

As we head into National Carer's Week for 2018, it's a great time to reflect on why we founded sameview. There are 2.7 million carers out there in Australia, and incredibly the unpaid support they provide contributes to over a billion dollars to the Australian economy each and every week.

At sameview we've been focused on the carers of children with disabilities, and the ecosystem of people who support or provide services to them. What we've seen is that families will go to extraordinary lengths to find solutions and interventions that can improve their child's life. As parents we seek to defy expectations, not because we are in denial, but because we believe in human potential.

Doctors, therapies, activities, education - every aspect of our child's daily life is a critical piece in maximising the potential of their future lives. Every little goal achieved creates a lifelong increase in capacity and independence. The stakes are high and timeframes are tight, creating a high pressure environment for families and providers.

One way we can take some of this pressure off is by making the entire ecosystem of families, doctors, therapists, support workers, and educators work better together.

In any situation around the world, we know that effective teams deliver better results. The people in these teams are collaborative, efficient, and united by a common purpose.

We believe that all families in the disability community deserve to have an effective team supporting them.

This is why we created sameview.

Platform update

It's great to see families and providers now using our platform and the new features last month. Families are now building their teams in sameview and also sharing updates with them. We are also excited that there are therapists who are inviting families onto the platform, providing a nice value added benefit to the great service they deliver.
What we've also just added:
  • Ability to change team member permissions is live now.
  • Better in-app support and guides, and
  • Much more we're working on right now.

1-on-1 support for all users

While we have an ever growing support library with videos and guides on how to use sameview, we understand that sometimes the easiest way is just to have someone talk you through it.

To do that we now have 1-on-1 support sessions (via phone or web) available that you can book yourself into here. New availability is being added constantly and there is also a late evening option for busy parents and providers.

Macquarie Uni Incubator

This week we had the lovely opportunity to speak at the Macquarie University Incubator and the Social Impact Hub's "Go Social" program for new social entrepreneurs. At the event we shared our experience in early stages of sameview, particularly around minimum viable product design and development. An amazing audience filled with ideas for how they could make a social impact, I can't wait to see what they achieve.

Optus Future Makers 2019

We were at the final of the Optus Future Makers program for 2019. This program is what made sameview a reality and it was great to see them support another great cohort of social entrepreneurs.

Memories from last year

One highlight I wanted to share about our win from Optus Future Makers 2018 is Daniel V.

Daniel is a talented operator in the digital media space and runs Uplight Media. Daniel was behind the camera interviewing me right after it was announced that we had won the 2018 program. In describing what sameview is Daniel stepped out from behind the camera and stopped to ask me again. I'll never forget how much it meant that he shared with us that he too is a parent like me, and that sameview is something that could help his family. it was so nice to be able to see Daniel again at the 2019 final.

Founder update

This has been a fun month at work and home. At sameview what I enjoy most is any chance I get to connect with the families and providers using our platform. Those conversations and connections is my fuel for driving sameview forward.

At home it has been a huge month. October is Monty's birthday month and this year we held a party for him and his friends from school. It's hard to believe that Monty is only six, he's a kid who has lived through a lifetime of experiences already. Don't grow up too quickly buddy!

I want to also introduce you to a new member of our family - Wilbur the cavoodle. Pets have always been a part of our household and we've been considering getting a dog for some time now. He's a lot of fun and adds so much joy to our family life.

This month is going to start with the excitement of carers week, and hopefully we'll be able to connect with more families and providers during this time. For sameview our focus right now is in getting feedback from you so that we know we are on the right track with a solution that people value.

Have a great month and speak to you soon.

Cheers,

Danny

sameview monthly - September

Hi, I still celebrate every time we get a new sign up. August has been a month of getting to know some of the great families and providers using sameview. With your feedback we have now introduced a whole new suite of features that we hope everyone will value.

Platform update

This month we released a whole bunch of new features we've been working on, and we couldn't have done it with the help of our current users who supported us through feedback and testing.

As always we are guided by your experience so if you have any feedback, or things you would love to see on sameview please let me know.
What's new:
  • Add team members.
  • Team member (provider/professional) profiles.
  • Ability to share and set permissions.
  • Goal and step completion.
  • Posting updates and photos to your timeline.
  • Multiple profiles for people that care for more than one person.

Making things easier

We know that using a new app or system can sometimes be difficult given how busy you are.

To make using sameview as easy and as fun as possible we've created guides and videos for everything in sameview. Every guide is short, and most importantly they are all easy to access.

You can find all the guides by using our chat button on the bottom right of the screen. You can also message me direct from here if you have any further questions.

Sharing our story with HotelsCombined

This month we had to opportunity to share our story, and the importance of disability care coordination and collaboration with the great people at HotelsCombined.

It was so great to be able to share our passion and our startup journey with a company that has reached such amazing heights since their humble beginnings. Their talented and committed staff were incredibly supportive and shared some great feedback and insights that will help our community.

National Disability Summit

During this month sameview attended the National Disability Summit in Melbourne. Like last year the best presentations were the ones made by individuals with lived experience or smaller support organisations. One key theme coming through is just how important innovation is to solving some of the toughest problems for our community - from community housing, regional support, or domestic violence. It only takes one person to start something that can benefit us all.

Laureate International Universities

Anneke and the lovely folks at Laureate have been an amazing source of support for us (they even came to our launch in Brisbane). Laureate are the world's largest global network of degree-granting higher education institutions with operations across 20 countries. We are excited to announce that they've invited sameview to be a part of an upcoming webinar for post-graduate educators. This will be a great opportunity for us to share our innovation story and also talk about the importance of inclusive education.

Founder update

For me it has been another busy month on both the home and work front. With sameview, my focus over the next month will be on supporting people who are using our platform, and also on the development of our online community. I'm also exited that we're going to be heading back out to Optus during the month to speak with this year's Future Maker cohort.

What do I do each day?

I get lots of questions from families and providers about how I manage sameview, whether I work at it full time and also how I juggle family life as well. I'm happy to share a bit more about my week and also other things I'm involved in. Sameview is a full-time commitment for me, and if anything we are close to needing more staff to support our efforts. Sameview is only possible because my wife Jess is working full-time herself to support our family.

Sameview is operated out of a co-working space called the Social Impact Hub. There, the community of value aligned social enterprises and professional have become my new family. It's also conveniently 10 minutes from the kid's school so I can still manage drop-off and pick up.

With appointments and activities Jess and I like to share these as much as we can, which means Jess has been doing some superhuman hours to create the flexibility that our family needs.

When I'm not spending time with the family or working on sameview I'll most likely be doing one of two things. The first is our local P&C where I'm the secretary, and the second is an incredible charity day program provider called Minimbah where I have the honour of serving on their board.

Looking forward to sharing more with you next month (including a special new addition to our family). Thank you for your continuing support.

Danny
This is our family celebrating Father's Day this year. We hope all of our sameview dads also had a great Father's Day too!
Thank you again for supporting us.

sameview monthly - August

Hi, we are one month post going live and there is much to tell you about. You are receiving this newsletter because you are a part of our growing family of users and supporters. We are so lucky to have you on this journey with us.

Platform update

The sameview platform user base has been growing with new users every week. To give you some insight into who is using our platform, we currently have about a 50/50 mix of families and providers using sameview.
In our family user base, the majority are families who care for a child with a disability, with some adult users who are managing their own care. In the provider space the majority are clinicians across all categories (OT, Speech, Physio, Psychology, etc.).

New features

At launch new users could register on the platform, build their profiles, and also their goals.

Since then we have been been working hard on feedback received and we're excited to announce that the upcoming features of the next release (mid-August) will include:
  • Add team members.
  • Team member (provider/professional) profiles.
  • Ability to share and set permissions.
  • Goal and step completion.
  • Posting updates and photos to your timeline.
  • and more!

sameview community

As we mentioned last month, we have also opened a private space for our users to discuss issues relevant to our community. So far we have been experimenting with discussion of topics such as goal setting, and also new features for the sameview platform. This community is also growing and we're working on developing more valuable content for it.

Our aim is for the group to be a trusted place where the sameview community can work positively to solve problems for each other.

Jobs for NSW Grant

This month we finalised our project with Jobs For NSW as part of their Minimum Viable Product grant. We would like to thank them for their generous support and also to the Royal Far West organisation and their families for their participation in our trials.

Founder update

It has been so interesting to see what sameview families have been sharing with us as they have been using the platform. What stands out is just how diverse and unique our goals are. Some families have told us that they are working on therapy specific goals, some are focused on what's happening at school, and some are working on things for the whole family, like being able to go out for an event.

What brings us all together is that we need our supports to work collaboratively, and to take some of the pressure off us as parents so that we have the room to dream big and work hard towards the future we want for our families.

In the media this month there has also been much talk about the Australian government's MyHealth record. I'm often asked what my view of it is, and how sameview might work with it. My view is that a portable record of our health is something we absolutely need. It frustrates me that in the media you hear more from people who don't have medical conditions that requires more effective and coordinated care. That being said I can appreciate the concerns around privacy and security.

In our family life we've had a busy month as well. For Monty we've charged into term 3 with a whole new list of things we are now doing. Some really exciting things we've been working on include Monty dressing himself as much as he can each day, and trying out different assistive technology tools to help him eat more independently. Having just received our first NDIS plan we're now also in the phase of building our "dream team" of supports.
One of the more fun ways to do therapy, and a feeding device we've been trying out at home.
Thank you again for supporting us.

Cheers,
Danny

sameview monthly - July

Hi, thank you so much for your continued support. It has been a big month here and I hope that things have been great for you too.

We are live!

I'm happy to tell you that we had a great launch of the sameview platform at the Brisbane SourceKids Expo. Over the two days, we met over 3,000 families, professionals, support organisations, and services that all with a focus on children with disabilities.
From the people who met us in person and our early supporters, we now have a great cohort of families and providers using the platform. I can't wait to get their feedback so we solve the issue of care coordination together.
Want to use our platform, or know someone that does? We can't wait for you to try it out. Sign-up at www.sameview.com.au, or share with a friend using the button below.

The sameview community

In addition to our platform going live, our sameview community is now running and growing with value aligned families and providers every day. The community has been established as a more engaging way for us to have conversations about care coordination, and other relevant issues. It is also the place where we can empower each person to have a say on the development of the sameview platform.

Optus Future Makers

A year ago we received the biggest boost to our startup possible by being chosen as a finalist in the Optus Future Makers program. This week it was our honour to meet the finalists for this year's program, many of whom are creating solutions for the disability community. We can't wait to see what they achieve.

Founder update

What a month! The support we've received from all the families and professionals out there is all the inspiration we need to keep going, and there wasn't a single person out of the 3,000 we met last weekend that didn't identify with the problem we are trying to solve.

Special thanks to my amazing sister-in-law Ellie, who along with her soon to be born child helped us to launch sameview in Brisbane. We couldn't have done it without you!

For my family, the launch came just before the start of the school holidays. These holidays have been dedicated to therapy for Monty as we've backed off appointments recently to give him space to transition into kindy. It's not the most fun school holidays for Monty or his siblings, but an intensive block of therapy is also very effective.
There was only about 10 minutes between these photos. I'd be tired too after an entire week of therapy.
Like most people juggling work / school holidays, my work hours are now mostly in the evening. Thank goodness I have the Tour de France broadcast to keep me company each night.

Next month I'll be sharing with you how our platform is being received, along with what we're talking about within our community. I'll also be down at the National Disability Summit in Melbourne later that month.

Thank you again for supporting us.

Cheers,
Danny

What's in the app and next steps

Ready right now within the app is functionality for profile creation, goal setting, and also customisable key information. Within the upcoming weeks you'll see invitations for team members, tracking, and posting of information.

What's most important is that everyone on the platform will have the chance to give us feedback as we roll out features. We want the final result to be a collaborative effort from our community.
To be a part of the feedback community and to also participate in discussions around the issue of care coordination, a private community has been set up and users of the app will be invited to participate. To make it a bit easier to invite you, please like and follow us by visiting www.facebook.com/sameviewaus, or by clicking the button below.
